Greek birthrate trails EU average
At 1.3 live births per woman, Greece is ranked among the countries with the lowest birthrates in the EU, according to a survey conducted by the bloc’s Eurostat data agency in 2014 and published Tuesday.
Apart from Greece, other crisis-hit countries such as Portugal, Cyprus and Spain also ranked at the bottom end of the spectrum, on 1.2, 1.31 and 1.32 live births per woman respectively.
France recorded the highest birthrate at 2.01 per woman, ahead of Ireland (1.94), Sweden (1.88) and Britain (1.81).
