University heads call on students to help clean up campus

Unable to afford cleaning services, the University of Athens has called on its academics, administrative staff, volunteers and especially students, who number 100,000, to take part in the effort to clean up the grounds of its campus at Panepistimioupoli in Zografou on Sunday at 10 a.m.

University authorities said they are joining the effort to ensure that Sunday’s cleanup of the campus, which covers over 130 hectares, will have a better turnout than the last one in February, which only managed to draw 150 people (including academics, staff and postgraduate students).

The low turnout was attributed to the fact that the vast majority of students were preparing to sit exams.

Last October, volunteers and municipal cleaning units removed a total of 5.5 tons of garbage and Sunday’s task is expected to be no less demanding.
