Military forces to get own unions

Defense Minister Panos Kammenos and his alternate, Dimitris Vitsas, have approved an amendment introduced by 27 SYRIZA MPs to allow labor unions in the armed forces.

Greece already has a central union for military personnel but the new amendment will allow officers from all the armed forces to elect representatives on a regional level.

The unions will be given a space from which to operate but this will be under the supervision of the regional commander. They will also be governed by certain restrictions. Members, for example, will not be allowed to make public statements to the media or plan work stoppages and strikes.

They are also prohibited from involvement in base management.
