Greek soccer fans will need special IDs to enter stadiums

Greek football supporters will be obligated to carry special identification cards starting September 30, Deputy Minister of Sports Stavros Kontonis announced Wednesday.

He said the new measure is being taken to combat the violence which has plagued the country's stadiums in recent years.

The identification cards must be shown for entry to the stadiums and will include the name, photograph, police identification number, health insurance identification and the address of the card holder.

Without the cards fans cannot purchase tickets.

Spectators will have to pay two euros for each card and it will be valid for two years. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by adults.

The Greek Super League season begins August 20 and fans have a little more than a month to obtain the cards for matches on September 30 and onwards.
