Walkouts to disrupt transport and services

Commuters are in for three days of upheaval as public transport employees hold work stoppages as part of protest action timed to coincide with a general strike Wednesday and an austerity vote in Parliament on Thursday.

On Tuesday there will be no buses from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. while on Wednesday and Thursday buses will run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

On Wednesday, trolley buses will run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. while the Piraeus-Kifissia electric railway (ISAP) and the Athens metro will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; there will be no service from Doukissis Plakentias metro station to Athens International Airport at all as trains will not be running on the OSE national railway network.

Tuesday OSE workers are to walk off the job from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. in a show of respect for the victims of the derailment of an intercity train in Adendro, northern Greece, on Saturday.

A four-hour work stoppage by air-traffic controllers from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday will ground scheduled flights during that time period. Those with plans to travel should contact their airlines for revised times.

There will be no ferry services Tuesday or Wednesday as seamen join the protest against austerity.

Wednesday’s general strike will also see services at state hospitals disrupted as doctors and nurses launch a 48-hour walkout while Tuesday’s strike by journalists will halt news bulletins on television and mean no newspapers circulate Wednesday.
