Prosecutor to probe sale of Papantoniou property

TAGS: Corruption

Just days after criminal charges were leveled against former Socialist defense minister Yiannos Papantoniou and his wife Stavroula Kourakou for money laundering, a corruption prosecutor on Wednesday ordered an investigation into the sale of a property belonging to the former Socialist official.

According to sources, the country’s top corruption prosecutor Eleni Touloupaki wants to determine whether the sale last year of the property, which is located on the Aegean island of Syros, was bogus or not. Touloupaki also wants to establish why Papantoniou was granted tax clearance by Greek authorities as he has tax dues.

The development came less than a week after Papantoniou and his wife were banned from leaving from the country after being charged with money laundering over an account belonging to Papantoniou, which was in the Borjans list of Greeks with large deposits in Switzerland’s UBS.
