Amphipolis tomb closer to ESPA funds

TAGS: Archaeology, Finance

The Culture Ministry has submitted a fresh request for 1.5 million euros in European funds to preserve and promote a tomb dating to the era of Alexander the Great near Amphipolis in Macedonia, northern Greece.

The request for money from the EU program, known as the Partnership Agreement for the Development Framework (ESPA), will first be examined by the Regional Authority of Central Macedonia.

Officials rejected an earlier bid in June, alleging that the ministry had made errors during the submission process. Sources told Kathimerini that the new bid is significantly improved.

The opulent underground monument caused a stir during excavations in 2014, but initial public speculation that it could be Alexander’s tomb was dismissed by experts.
