Police make 11 arrests after Grigoropoulos rally

A total of 11 people were arrested and 26 detained during the rioting that broke out on Wednesday at a demonstration to mark the nine-year anniversary since the murder of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos by a policeman in central Athens.

Eight of those arrested are Greeks, one is Italian, one Albania and the other Romanian. Three of the Greeks are minors, while the others are aged between 19 and 36.

The suspects face charges of grievous bodily harm, arson, vandalism and illegal possession of weapons and explosives.

Police said they also seized five explosive devices, 16 unused Molotov cocktails and eight gas canisters.

Three policemen were injured during the clashes, which led to extensive damage being caused in the central Athens neighborhood of Exarchia.
