Employees in retail sector call strike on Sunday
The Federation of Greece's Private Employees (OIYE) on Wednesday announced a nationwide strike on July 15 in the retail sector, to protest the opening of stores a few Sundays during the year.
“The fight of retail employees against the opening of stores and work on Sundays is in reality a fight of all employees to defend the 8-hour workday, the five-day week and the 40-hour week, an achievement that employers and governments want to abolish,” the federation said in a press release.
Shops throughout Greece will be allowed to open this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., which falls in the first week of summer sales that started on July 9.
The Retail Association of Greece said sales will last until August 31.
