Three years after Pope Francis took 12 Syrian refugees back to the Vatican with him after visiting the Moria migrant camp, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, head of the Vatican’s alms office, returned to the infamous facility on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos on Thursday to inspect conditions and express solidarity with asylum-seekers. Krajewski reportedly distributed more than $100,000 to Caritas Hellas, the local branch of the Catholic Church-run charity. He was accompanied by Jean-Claude Hollerich, the archbishop of Luxembourg and president of the Bishops’ Conferences of the EU. [Vatican Media Handout/EPA]
