Workers on the Acropolis stand by as a crane lifts a massive marble column drum from the mid-fifth century BC Parthenon temple into the air. The huge conservation and restoration effort under way on the ancient citadel has resumed following a halt for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Experts are fighting to reverse the effects of acid rain, earthquakes and bungled previous restorations on the Acropolis monuments.
