Lawyers, who had been on strike for all of last week, will go back to work today, the Athens Bar Association said in a statement yesterday. The lawyers had been protesting the pension reforms bill. Bank of Greece employees, however, will carry on with a 24-hour strike today.

Greece’s 4x200-meter freestyle swimming team came seventh at the European Swimming Championships in the Ditch city of Eindhoven yesterday. Greece won two gold medals late on Friday night with Yiannis Drymonakos winning the 200-meter butterfly and Aris Grigoriadis coming first in the 50-meter backstroke.

Two men, aged 34 and 35, were injured in Thessaloniki late on Saturday when a fight broke out at a nightspot for an unknown reason, police said yesterday. One man had a bullet wound in his leg, most likely from an automatic weapon, and the second man suffered a knife injury. The two men are being treated in the hospital under police guard.

A fisherman on Vevi Lake, near northern Greece’s Florina, found a human body floating in the water, police said on Saturday. The body belonged to a 23-year-old man, who had been missing since mid February, police added. Police gave no further information.

Hundreds of protesters on Saturday attended a rally in central Athens organized by labor unions and leftist groups to mark five years since the US-led invasion of Iraq. Demonstrators marched to the US Embassy, calling on Washington to withdraw US troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. They also protested US intervention in the Balkans.

Rain and strong winds will replace the recent spell of mild weather in most of the country over the next three days, including tomorrow’s public holiday. Attica will escape most of the bad weather but some showers are expected.

Firefighters in Hania had to quell four fires yesterday that broke out as a result of farmers burning brush. No injuries or damage was reported. Meanwhile, a house was seriously damaged on Saturday in the area of Lagadas, near Thessaloniki but nobody was injured.
