SNOW BOUND

Drivers told to use chains due to freezing weather

Drivers in various parts of the country, including Drama, Serres, Pella, Kilkis, Xanthi, Kastoria, Florina, Kozani as well as areas of central Greece were advised to put snow chains on their tires before venturing out onto the road, following heavy snowfall over the weekend. Heavy rain caused several pile-ups on the Athens-Lamia national road on Saturday but there were no reports of deaths or serious injuries.

SERIAL THIEVES

Three men caught on Crete

Three men have been arrested on the island of Crete on charges of committing over 30 burglaries in the prefecture of Iraklion in the past two months. The three men, aged 21, 23 and 25, all residents of Hania, were arrested on Friday afternoon near the town of Kastelli after police had set up road blocks. They were found in possession of money, gold and other objects stolen from villages in the region. The burglaries were committed at night when the occupants of the homes were asleep or in the afternoon when the residents, mostly elderly people, were not at home.

Fatal robbery

Nafplion police are on the track of three men who attacked and robbed a postman on the Drepano-Kantia road in Argolida in early November. The postman died later at the hospital from the injuries sustained in the attack. Following a tip-off, police have identified one of the men as a 26-year-old Greek, while the other two were aged about 25 but have not yet been identified. The 26-year-old is also wanted on other charges of robbery and arson.

Final hunt

A hunter was killed on Saturday when the farm vehicle he was driving on a country road near Kerkini, in northern Greece, skidded on the snow and crashed into a ditch, crushing him. The 64-year-old man was returning home from a hunting trip.

Port arrest

A 46-year-old truck driver was arrested in Patras on Saturday night as he was about to board a ferry to Italy after port authority officials found 59 migrants hidden among the goods he was carrying. The driver, whose nationality was not revealed, was taken into custody and his vehicle impounded. The migrants were detained.

Beach bar burned

A popular summer bar on the beach at Aghia Marina, Hania on Crete was destroyed by fire over the weekend. The flames made short work of the flammable material (cane, wood and straw matting) in the bar, which was closed for the winter season. Nobody was injured.
