The deadline for car owners to pay their 2013 road tax has been extended until January 8 as about 20 percent of motorists had yet to come forward by the original end date of December 31.
There was a last-minute rush, which saw 860,000 vehicle owners pay the levy at tax offices and banks on Friday, December 29, but the long queues meant many were not able to meet the deadline.
By the same date, some 80,000 motorists had handed in their license plates to avoid paying road tax for another year.
About 100,000 motorists took their vehicles out of circulation last year.
The Finance Ministry said that the government is losing about 30 million euros a year as a result of motorists handing in their license plates.
