Key arms bribe suspect to face magistrates

One of the key suspects in the probe into bribes that were allegedly paid to Greek officials to secure arms deals is due to face magistrates Gavriil Mallis and Yiannis Stavropoulos in Athens this week,

Michalis Matantos, a representative of the German firm Ferrostaal, is expected to answer questions on Tuesday after evidence was found suggesting that some 70 million euros had been moved through accounts he owned. If this proves correct, this would represent the biggest bribe that has ever been paid to public officials in Greece.

Matantos owned a company, IME, that also worked with another German firm, Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW). Sotiris Emmanouil, the former head of the Skaramangas shipyards, was remanded in custody on Friday after denying that he had received a 17-million-euro bribe in connection to a deal for the Hellenic Navy to buy four submarines.
