Vaxevanis trial postponed

A Greek court on Monday postponed the trial of Greek investigative reporter and Hot Doc editor Costas Vaxevanis who is facing misdemeanor charges over the publication of a list including the names of over 2,000 Greeks holding accounts in a HSBC branch in Geneva. A new trial date was set for Thursday, November 1.

Dubbed the “Lagarde List” the names had been communicated to former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou by his French counterpart at the time, Christine Lagarde.

Coming out of the Athens court complex on Monday afternoon Vaxevanis told journalists that it was his duty to publish the list which remained unexploited for two years.

The authenticity of the list published by Hot Doc has yet to be verified by Greek authorities.

Vaxevanis was arrested on Sunday for violating data privacy laws and was released later on the same day.

According to statements made by Vaxevanis' lawyers on Monday, the journalist's defense team will seek to unveil the case’s political dimension.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the trial was postponed in order to allow certain individuals whose names were included on the list to testify as witnesses.
