Late buying spree brings monthly gains on Athens Exchange

A last-gasp effort by the benchmark index to stay afloat for the first month of the year paid off on Friday, as a late buying spree on the Greek bourse resulted in gains for most stocks, reversing earlier losses, and a 1.22 percent rise on a monthly basis from end-December.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,176.92 points, adding 1.83 percent to Thursday’s 1,155.81 points.

Compared with last Friday the index declined by 0.60 percent. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 expanded 1.38 percent to 385.27 points.

Titan Cement stood out among blue chips, expanding by 5.85 percent, followed by Jumbo (up 4.91 percent), Marfin Investment Group (4.70 percent) and Ellaktor (4.67 percent).

Coca-Cola HBC (-2.63 percent) and National Bank (11.20 percent) were the day’s biggest losers.

In total 74 stock posted gains, 51 registered losses and 24 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 80.9 million euros, just down on Thursday’s 81.7 million euros.
