Taxpayers paying the price
In politics, sloppiness and poor judgement can come at a hefty price. Today they have led Greek taxpayers to a deadlock.
Tax authorities were not ready to issue the notices for property tax on time. Meanwhile, our politicians made sure that they delayed the whole process even further so that it would not coincide with the last national election.
As a result, Greek property owners are now called upon to pay three years of taxes in the course of just a few months.
There is more to the story, however, as the so-called objective property values (in other words, the property values used for tax purposes) are way too high for current market prices, while the number of installments allowed for by the state have been reduced so that Greece can meet it fiscal targets.
Greek citizens that have always fulfilled their commitments to the tax office have every reason to be upset by recent developments.
