Citizens at wits' end

The state has a duty to show its citizens that it respects them, and especially those who, despite the difficulties they are facing, have managed to pay their taxes on time and carry out to all their other obligations to the state. These people need to see actions from the state that show it acknowledges their efforts.

However, instead of finding a way to reward prompt taxpayers, the authorities chose to send arrears warnings for the property tax of previous years just before the Christmas holidays and without clear instructions of what exactly the warning regarded or how the arrears can be paid.

Now, thousands of citizens have found themselves caught in a tragicomic battle with the tax authorities, which have been merged in the meantime, adding to the overall confusion. The politicians and officials behind these decisions surely have no idea of the frustration that average citizens experience every day, but it is time that they tried to do something to alleviate the burden.
