Panathinaikos sacks coach Pedoulakis

By George Georgakopoulos

Panathinaikos basketball club announced on Saturday afternoon the sacking of coach Argyris Pedoulakis in the wake of the shock home loss to Laboral Kutxa for the Euroleague the previous night.

The club's owner was reportedly discontent with the performance of the team in the last few games and chose to let go of the coach who in the last 18 months has won the Greens two Greek Cups and one Greek league and has the team three points clear at the top of this season's standings in Greece.

Since the whole of Pedoulakis's coaching team has left, team manager Frangiskos Alvertis is taking over at the club and will lead Monday's training. There is a chance Alvertis will remain as caretaking coach by the end of the season.

Sources close to Panathinaikos president Dimitris Giannakopoulos alleged that the team's offensive potential remained untapped as Pedoulakis's absolute priority was in defense. They also cited the risk that Panathinaikos now runs of missing out on the quarterfinals of the Euroleague this season.

If Panathinaikos does hire another coach, the favorite for the post is Fotis Katsikaris, according to reports.
