Kalamata dance festival celebrates 30th anniversary

A total of 19 productions, 10 local and nine from abroad, are included in the 30th edition of the Kalamata International Dance Festival, Greece’s leading contemporary dance event and one of the most important in Europe, from July 12 to 21.

The festival’s artistic director Linda Kapetanea says dancers “work daily with their body, confronting its limitations but also its inexhaustible and mysterious possibilities.”

The long list of performers include the Hessian State Ballet, marking its Greek debut, while prominent Serbian choreographer Josef Nadj will present “Full Moon” – a work that starts its international tour on Thursday and brings the 66-year-old on stage together with seven other dancers, on a journey of “lunar” rhythm through the world of black jazz and the dominant symbols of African culture.

Patricia Apergi and the dance group Aerites will present “House of Trouble” (photo), touching on the concept of identity and the violence that one can suffer or exercise in order to define oneself.
