Celebrating sport and art in Thessaloniki

Is art a sport or a feat? That is the question that artists participating in the 16th Biennale of Sport in Modern Art (Bienal Internacional del Deporte en el Arte – BIDA) will examine in Thessaloniki next week. The event is organized by the Greek Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Consejo Superior de Deportes of Spain within the framework of the International Year of Sport and Physical Education and the 17th European Conference on Sport. It is the first time the Biennale will take place outside Spain. Beginning this week (and running to September 30) participating artworks will go on display at the city’s Macedonian Museum of Modern Art as well as the Kaftanzogleio National Stadium (installations, videos, photography). A marathon For the organizers, the event is billed as an opportunity to host an artistic «marathon» that will turn the Kaftanzogleio into a stadium for sport and art. The project’s creative director is Marta Moriarty. Among the participating artists are Giorgos Lazongas, Manolis Babousis, Danae Stratou, Chrysi Tsiota, Alexandros Psychoulis and Yioula Hadjigeorgiou (Cyprus), Fernando Baena (Spain), Joan Cortes (Spain), Rula Hallawani (Palestine), Frederique Lecerf (France) and Yoav Ben-David (Israel).
