A Greek film in Montreal

The odd and unexpected ties in a typical Greek family, pornographic films and globalization are explored in Costas Zappas’s latest film, «The Last Porn Movie,» selected for screening at the Montreal World Film Festival, which began on August 24. The film, which will be shown in the Focus on World Cinema section, follows the life of a young woman as it takes a startling turn after her ex-porn star father is forced by his producers to cast his daughter in a pornographic film he is hoping to make. «It is very important that the film has been entered in such a large international event, because it is an independent production that needs recognition since it has received no official support whatsoever,» Zappas said. «It is not an easy film to watch because of the subject, which is a taboo that also has to do with globalization. The more people become dependent on material needs, the greater lengths they will reach to attain them… It is about an infringement of the laws of ethics, and this is where the tragedy begins.» The director said the film’s provocative subject is also a theme that resonates internationally. «Because of globalization, we see a redistribution and things that we think of as national or traditional values suddenly become global,» he said. «The family unit also becomes globalized, a part of the global society. I don’t know whether this is good or bad, but Greeks, for example, are now able to understand things in the same way as Germans do.» The film stars Sotiria Leonardou, Kalliope Tachtsoglou and Dimitris Georgalas. It will open in Greece at the Opening Nights Festival, which begins on September 20.
