Northern Greece celebrates

Organized for the 16th year by the Municipality of Xanthi, the «Old City Celebrations» are an open invitation to all the residents of northern Greece, as well as to the region’s visitors. The event, which kicks off this coming Sunday (September 3) and runs to September 10, will feature different forms of entertainment for both adults and children, including music, theater, literature, film screenings, sporting events and more. Singer Eleftheria Arvanitaki, joined by Manos Pyrovolakis, will mark the official opening on Sunday with a concert in Xanthi’s Mitropoleos Square. This will be followed by an evening of traditional Greek dances by a number of the city’s dance troupes on September 5, while further concerts are on the agenda – by Evridiki and Dimitris Korgialas (Sep. 7), Giorgos Mangas (Sep. 8), Glykeria and Gerasimos Andreatos (Sep. 9) and Constantinos Thalassohoris and Giorgos Aloupoyiannis (Sep. 10). Meanwhile, Xanthi’s Municipal Gallery will host, among other things, a photography exhibition titled «From the History of Thrace, 1875-1925,» from Dimitris Mavridis’s collection along with a group exhibition of paintings by artists who live and work in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
