Festival celebrates end of summer in Athens
his summer promises to end on an exciting note with the events organized at the renovated Papagou Garden Theater. Equipped with 1,600 additional seats, the theater will host 12 performances of plays and nine concerts from August 23 to September 23. The Oniriki Kompania (Dream Band) will kick off events with Giorgos Ventouzas performing music that is to feature Greek folk and rebetika classics by Vassilis Tsitsanis and Markos Vamvakaris, among others. A series of theater shows will follow: The Greek National Theater will stage Jean Racine’s tragedy «Andromache» on the 25th and the Aichmi Greek Theater Organization will present Georgios Hortatsis’s «Erofili» on the 27th. Aristophanes’ anti-war comedy «Lysistrata,» a National Theater of Northern Greece production, will be staged on the 30th and will be followed by Euripides’ tragedy «Iphigenia at Aulis,» a Municipal Regional Theater of Larissa production, the next day. September starts with a musical tribute to Greek cinema on the first of the month and «The Knights,» another comedy by Aristophanes, will be presented on the 13th. The agenda for concerts is also rich: Eleni Vitali will perform on September 4 and Tonino Carotone and Arpioni will join forces with Babis Tsertos on the 6th. Under the baton of Stavros Xarhakos, the State Orchestra of Greek Music will give a concert on September 8, the ERT Greek Radio & TV National Symphony Orchestra will perform on the 11th conducted by Vladimiros Symeonidis and popular singer Yiannis Kotsiras will play on September 12, among other events.
