Oscar-winning film composer performs tonight in Athens

Local audiences have enjoyed his shows at the Herod Atticus Theater, in Thessaloniki and even on Delos. Oscar-winning Italian composer Nicola Piovani is back in Greece for a show at the Vrachon Theater this evening. Piovani is probably best known for the music for Federico Fellini’s 1987 film «Intervista,» not to forget Roberto Benigni’s «Life is Beautiful» (1997), for which he also received the Academy Award for Original Dramatic Score. Piovani has composed more than 130 film scores. In tonight’s concert, he will play the piano, accompanied by saxophonist and clarinetist Marina Cesari, guitarist and cellist Pasquale Filasto as well as double bassist, percussionist and harmonica player Gianluca Palloca. Greek vocalist Christos Thivaios is also scheduled to make a guest appearance. Piovani has said he feels close to Greece and has often sited Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis as a fundamental influence during the early stages of his career. Piovani entered the world composing scores for film music in 1970. This move came after numerous other projects, including accompanying vocalists on the piano, performing at lesser-known clubs and even composing music for a puppeteer. Tickets for tonight’s show can be purchased at Public in Syntagma, at Ianos (24 Stadiou) and at Fnac stores.
