Banks lead bourse to gains

News that there would be no extension to the deadline for the debt swap, which is set for Thursday evening, secured gains for bank stocks that lifted the rest of the local bourse too in Tuesday?s session.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 755.06 points, adding 2.77 percent to Monday?s closing level of 734.70 points.

The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index expanded by 4.21 percent to end at 309.65 points.

Banks soared, with Eurobank EFG jumping 20.41 percent, Alpha rising 19.23 percent and Hellenic Postbank adding 14.67 percent.

In total, 99 stocks registered gains, 57 posted losses and 22 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 70.4 million euros against just 31.7 million on Monday.
