Small stock gains despite poor turnover

The Athens bourse experienced on Friday, the smallest turnover in a session for a long time, although its main index registered gains of just under 1 percent braving the continued decline of bank stocks.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 772.66 points, adding 0.99 percent to Thursday?s closing level of 765.07 points.

The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index grew by 0.64 percent to close at 306.82 points.

The banks? sectoral index contracted for a fourth day in succession as National Bank shed 3.67 percent and Eurobank EFG fell by 1.64 percent. However the blue-chip index climbed thanks to Bank of Cyprus (up 6.81 percent) and Hellenic Petroleum (3.08 percent).

In total, 70 stocks registered gains, 68 posted losses and 32 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to just 22.5 million euros, down from 33.2 million on Thursday.
