New system for local hotel classification

The Hellenic Chamber of Hotels is promoting the application of a European rating system in this country that will lead to the reclassification of local units.

Giorgos Tsakiris, the chamber’s head, presented the system on Monday, while heralding a new mechanism aimed at combating misleading Internet advertising.

The Hotelstars Union rating system, already applied in 13 European countries, will help to classify Greece’s hotel tourism product by taking into consideration 270 criteria.

The chamber says it has already reclassified 220 hotels across Greece according to the new system with very encouraging results.

Tsakiris said that the application of the test has shown that Greek hotels can be easily compared with other European units in the system.

Besides the five star-rated categories, there will also be the “superior” indication for hotels that top their class.
