ATHEX: Late sales lead stocks index to weekly loss
The trading week ended with notable losses on Friday for the Greek bourse benchmark. The slide was extended in the last few minutes of the session as investors appeared to see little scope for gains at Athinon Avenue in the short term, which also explains the drop in trading volume.
The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 636.83 points, shedding 1.33 percent from Thursday’s 645.40 points. On a weekly basis it declined 0.41 percent, as Friday’s losses reversed the gains recorded during the week.
The large-cap FTSE 25 index contracted 2.21 percent to end at 176.75 points, while mid-caps advanced 0.59 percent.
The banks index closed near the day’s low, giving up 4.32 percent. Eurobank sank 6.48 percent, Piraeus conceded 5.76 percent, Alpha dropped 3.17 percent and National fell 3.01 percent.
Ellaktor outperformed, rising 2 percent, followed by Jumbo with gains of 1.12 percent. OTE telecom shrank 4.11 percent, Aegean Air was down 2.66 percent and Mytilineos declined 2.09 percent.
In total 41 stocks registered gains, 54 took losses and 17 remained unchanged.
Turnover was the lowest of the last six sessions, amounting to 63.2 million euros, down from Thursday’s 84 million.
In Nicosia the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange decreased 0.65 percent to close at 67.45 points.
