Fresh rise in registered unemployed in November

Unemployment is going from bad to worse in Greece as the number of unemployed people registered with the Manpower Organization (OAED) continued to grow in November. This has generated strong concerns since the reduction trend observed in the summer has been reversed.

The number of jobless on the OAED register has risen above the million mark to 1,066,416, from 988,386 in October. Worse still, just one in every 10 out-of-work individuals receives the unemployment benefit (118,361 people). More than half (53.2 percent) of the 913,044 people seeking a job have been unemployed for more than 12 months, OAED data show. Five in eight are women (569,282), while 37.65 percent (343,762) are men.

The rise in the jobless figures in November is due to the end of the tourism season, leading to high numbers of employees who are without work coming from the sectors of accommodation and food service.
