ATHEX: Stock prices offset their October losses

A sudden jump in stock prices at the Greek bourse on Tuesday wiped out all of October’s losses for the benchmark and even gave it a 0.49 percent increase right at the end of the month, compared to September 30.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 759.30 points, adding 2.12 percent to Monday’s 743.57 points. The large-cap FTSE-26 index expanded 1.90 percent to close at 1,992.23 points.

Transactions gathered pace as the session progressed, as after a slow start there was an unexpected increase in purchases, led by bank stocks, whose index ended the day 5.25 percent higher. National Bank outperformed, growing 7.98 percent, ahead of Eurobank (up 6.37 percent) and Piraeus (5.11 percent).

Hellenic Petroleum improved 5.28 percent, while OTE fell 1.26 percent.

In total 88 stocks posted gains, 34 took losses and 30 closed unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 56.5 million euros, the highest of the last 21 sessions, up from Monday’s 28.7 million.

In Nicosia the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange advanced 0.79 percent to 73.79 points.
