Stock market plunges anew

Stocks wilted on the Greek bourse yesterday amid global worries about more bankruptcy cases in the US credit sector and the fresh slide of the dollar against the euro. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index dropped by 4.68 percent to 1,708.40 points. Mid- and small-caps suffered a more moderate drop. All blue chips posted a decline, led by Alpha Bank (down 6.94 percent), EFG Eurobank (6.68 percent), Piraeus Bank (5.94 percent), Coca-Cola HBC (5.57 percent) and National Bank (5.19 percent). Banks took the worst beating on the day as their sectoral index shrank by 5.49 percent. Food and drink dropped by 5.23 percent. Turnover reached 245 million euros.
