Halt Erdogan’s aggression: Expand Section 907 and give TurkStream the Nord Stream 2 treatment

Azerbaijan’s recent attacks against Armenia have once again seen calls for the US to revoke a waiver that the current and previous administrations have issued to Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, thus cutting military aid to Azerbaijan.

Given that Azerbaijan’s aggression is directly linked to Turkey, which openly supports Baku, the question has been raised whether Congress should apply a creative interpretation of Section 907 that includes Ankara as well. In the meantime, as Turkey grows more aggressive in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, its attempts to push for a new or enhanced TurkStream should raise concerns.

Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a former Pentagon official, joins Thanos Davelis to explain why it’s time to consider applying Section 907 to Turkey as well, and why the Biden administration should give trans-Turkish energy corridors the same treatment it ultimately gave Nord Stream 2.
