Erdogan says military threat to Greece a ‘basic principle’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan chose the end of the G20 meeting to repeat threats of a military strike against Greece, this time calling it a “basic principle.”

“What I’ve been saying for ever, that we can come suddenly one night, this is a basic principle. To me, this is a phrase that cannot be taken back… So, we can suddenly get there again,” Erdogan told Turkey’s TRT TV station when asked about relations with Greece.

Erdogan made this declaration hours after meeting US President Joe Biden, France’s Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Analysts believe that the Turkish president failed to get from Biden an ironclad guarantee that the sale of F-16 fighters and upgrade kits will go through. Macron explicitly called on Erdogan to avoid tensions in the Mediterranean and facilitate Finland and Sweden’s bid to join NATO.
