Five arrested in Thessaloniki march on anniversary of student uprising

Five people were arrested, 85 detained and two officers suffered minor injuries during clashes broke out at a march in the northern city of Thessaloniki to the US consulate, to mark the anniversary of a 1973 student uprising that was brutally crushed by Greece’s military dictatorship at the time.

The clashes broke out when a small group of demonstrators thurled Molotov cocktails and rocks at riot police, who responded with tear gas and stun grenades.

The arrestees will be led before a prosecutor on Friday.

The Polytechnic School of the city’s Aristotle University suffered some damages during the same march.

The anniversary is observed each year in Athens and Thessaloniki with marches from Athens Polytechnic university to the US Embassy which have often, though not always, turned violent. Thursday’s similar march in Athens was largely peaceful.
