Manos and Liberals hang up their gloves
Stefanos Manos and his Liberals, a party he founded on April 29, 1999, said yesterday that they were suspending the party’s operations and would not contest the next elections, citing lack of support and lack of funds. Manos and another member who were elected to Parliament on the main opposition New Democracy party’s ticket in April 2000 will see out their terms as independents. Manos, a former New Democracy minister of national economy, is known for independent thinking and advanced economic and social ideas. In a statement he said: Our vision was to bring together independent citizens who would not accept a compromise with the way today’s parties function nor their ideas and policies, he said. Our party’s effect was disproportionately small compared to the way Greek society welcomed our ideas. The lack of funds played a decisive role.
