The government will cooperate with all elected officials, spokesman says

The government will cooperate with all the elected officials of the regional and local administration, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said during a press briefing on Monday.

Marinakis congratulated those elected and underlined that four months ago the national elections confirmed the citizens’ trust in the governing party. He also pointed out that the result in the first round of the local elections revealed the citizens’ political choices adding that the government takes the results of both rounds into account. “The government will keep its feet on the ground. We will implement our program in cooperation with all entities,” Marinakis said.

Greece’s ruling New Democracy party suffered a setback in Sunday’s runoff elections for regional governors and mayors, losing the country’s two largest cities and five of the six regional contests.

According to the government spokesperson, “The election result is not a resounding slap as some say.”

“We take into account the citizens’ messages, as they were captured in both the first and second rounds. The government must walk with its feet firmly planted on the ground,” he stressed.

Regarding opposition parties, Marinakis made comments on both SYRIZA and PASOK by saying that “The president of the official opposition went to America on election day,” while accusing PASOK of “arrogance.” [AMNA/Kathimerini]
