Greek prosecutor orders probe into trial postponements

Supreme Court prosecutor Efterpi Koutzamani ordered an investigation on Wednesday to reveal whether any judges or prosecutors had failed to carry out their duties properly in relation to the repeated postponement of a municipal employee’s trial.

Koutzamani ordered the probe after the City of Athens complained on Tuesday that the trial of a municipal employee caught accepting a bribe had been postponed for the ninth time in two years.

The municipality said the unnamed public servant first went on trial on July 22, 2011.

The latest postponement came on June 28, when the presiding judge said he was not able to attend court.
