Three receive suspended sentences in Halkidiki bribery case

A misdemeanors court in Polygyros, Halkidiki, on Tuesday handed down suspended prison sentences to a 50-year-old municipal employee and his 46-year-old wife, who is a regional authority worker, after they were found guilty of seeking an 800-euro under-the-table payment, or “fakelaki,” to speed up the process of issuing an operating license for a pizzeria in Kassandreia, Halkidiki.

The couple each received a 21-month prison sentence, suspended for three years, while the court also handed down a 24-month suspended prison term to a 65-year-old man alleged to have acted as a go-between between the couple and the would-be entrepreneur.
