Snow to spread to Athens by Tuesday night

Temperatures plummeted on Monday with heavy snow making road transport precarious in many parts of northern Greece and lighter snow falling in the capital?s northern suburbs.

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) issued a severe weather warning, noting that snow would also start falling in Athens late on Tuesday and Wednesday. The worsening weather is expected to aggravate congestion on the roads of the capital.

On Monday, thousands of motorists braved snow and rain to return to Athens and other major cities after the long weekend. Traffic police appealed to motorists to use anti-skid chains where snowfall has made road surfaces slippery and to drive slowly and cautiously where heavy rain has been falling.

Stronger winds at sea obliged many vessels to remain docked at ports. Northwesterly winds are forecast to reach up to 10 on the Beaufort scale on Tuesday.
