PM to meet visiting Qataris
Prime Minister George Papandreou was on Saturday to receive at the Maximos Mansion the Emir of Qatar, Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani and the country?s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Ali Thani.
The meeting is being held in the context of a planned investment by Qatar in Greece, the Greek premier?s office said in a written statement, without providing details about the nature of the investment.
The government had appeared to come close to a deal with Qatar earlier this year to develop the old Athens airport in Elliniko, with the then state minister, Haris Paboukis, meeting with potential investors and pledging to steer the deal, estimated to be worth up to 7 billion euros, through a new fast-track privatization process.
However, the bid to sell the 170 acres of land, which used to house the city?s international airport until 2001, subsequently stalled.
