Main challenger urges Christofias to resign over blast
A key political rival of Cyprus President Dimitris Christofias on Tuesday urged the leader to resign or call early elections after an independent inquiry blamed him for a fatal munitions blast on the island in June. ?He has no choice. Either he steps down, or seeks a renewal of his mandate,? said Nicos Anastassiades, leader of the right-wing Democratic Rally party who is considered the main challenger in a presidential election scheduled for February 2013. According to the inquiry, Christofias bears direct responsibility for a blast at a navy munitions facility that killed 13 people in July.
