Business owner arrested over unpaid taxes

The owner of a well-known women?s clothing and footwear retailer has been given 24 hours to present herself before an investigating magistrate in Thessaloniki after allegedly failing to pay some 400,000 euros in value added tax (VAT), Skai reported on Wednesday.

It is the first time that a new legal provision, foreseeing the arrest and detention of individuals failing to pay outstanding taxes, has been enforced.

According to sources, authorities have drafted a list containing dozens more names of individuals believed to have evaded a total of around a million euros in taxes and who are expected to be approached in coming weeks and days.

Offenders who are convicted of tax evasion face jail terms of up to 20 years under new legislation.
