Illegal casino nets 1.2 million in 9 months

The Financial Police and the Electronic Crimes Squad dealt a considerable blow on illegal gambling by arresting a total of 69 people at a self-styled casino on Syngrou Avenue, south of the Athens city center, on Friday.

The illegal casino saw considerable amounts of money changing hands, with its profits rising to a staggering 1.2 million euros in the last few months, according to the police.

The owner of the casino remains at large, while among those arrested there is a police officer who has been suspended since May when he was found to have engaged in unlawful activities in that very location. He worked as security guard, one of the many the owner had employed to ensure he controlled who was coming in.

He and his associates had also installed no fewer than 30 security cameras as well.
