Charges issued over alleged attempt to kill former premier
First instance prosecutor Nikos Ornerakis issued charges against ?persons unknown? on Wednesday over an alleged attempt to assassinate Costas Karamanlis while he was prime minister.
Ornerakis launched an investigation last year following media reports in June about the alleged plot. They claimed that Russian secret agents had informed Greece?s National Intelligence Service (EYP) that they had collected information relating to a potential attempt to kill Karamanlis, who was premier from 2004 to 2009.
The reports suggested that a team of about 20 people had been monitoring the then prime minister.
Ornerakis questioned members of EYP, police officers and Karamanlis?s bodyguards about the allegations before issuing the charges.
