Athens rapist, robber caught

Police in Athens apprehended a 37-year-old man believed to be behind a number of robberies in the neighborhoods of Zografou and Ambelokipi, during which the suspect allegedly raped two of his victims.

The unnamed man is believed to have carried out at least five robberies in Zografou and Ambelokipi over the past three months.

He was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday following a police investigation into a string of crimes, during which women were waylaid as they entered their apartment buildings at night and forced to lead the robber into their homes. Two of the victims have claimed that after ransacking their homes for valuables, the suspect raped them.

A search of his residence uncovered cellphones belonging to robbery victims, a revolver, a knife, a can of knock-out spray, a full face mask, gloves, two retractable metal clubs and other weapons.
