Deputy minister to abstain from vote on 30-mln-euro party funding

Deputy Defense Minister Yiannis Ragousis said that he would not take part in Monday?s vote in Parliament concerning party funding.

Deputies are due to decide whether the five parliamentary parties should receive 30 million euros in funding as a lump sum ahead of the elections. This relates to the regular state funding the parties receive, although the amendment calls for the last instalment from 2011 and two from this year to be paid in one go.

The proposal has drawn criticism from the smaller parties.

Ragousis, previously interior and transport minister, said that this amendment suggested the political system had a ?suicidal tendency.?
