Second grenade found at media group [Update]

A second hand grenade was found in the courtyard of the Neo Faliro building housing the Kathimerini SA media group, which includes Skai television and radio, after a tip-off from an anonymous caller on Sunday afternoon.

“There’s a second grenade; look carefully,» the anonymous caller was reported as saying, though he failed to provide any more details into the motives of the attack.

Police had cordoned off the area around the building, which is on the southern coast of Athens near Piraeus, as bomb experts examined the first grenade that was thrown into the building’s courtyard earlier in the day and was spotted by an employee. Following the anonymous call, police located a second grenade in a flower bed.

Both grenades were armed but failed to go off. They are believed to be of the same make as those used by the Russian military.

Bomb specialists from the Greek military are expected at the building to remove the two grenades.

This double assault against the media group comes less than two weeks after unknown assailants launched four firebombs on June 5 into the same courtyard, causing slight damage to the building’s exterior.

No one has been injured in either of the attacks.

Representatives of all mainstream political parties condemned the incident.
