Greek society under strain, warns global labor group

Nine in 10 Greeks have seen their wages fall during the economic crisis, according to a survey by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) presented in Athens on Monday.

The ITUC?s General Secretary Sharan Burrow said that she met with Greek workers who were ?scared people, people who were frightened to have children because they don?t know if they can look after them.?

She warned that the fabric of Greek society was being destroyed.

?When a nation loses its hope, then its trust in democratic institutions wanes and social unrest is more likely,? said Burrow.

She accused Greece?s lenders of not being aware of the social dangers of the crisis.

?They have not realized there is a possibility of social unrest because all they?ve studied so far are numbers.?

The ITUC represents 175 million workers in 153 countries and territories.
